Project Title: Mitigating vulnerabilities in selective smart home devices and proposing recommendations to achieve security

Project Description

My project mainly focused on the security of smart home devices and testing them. The main devices considered was a casting device similar to Google Chrome and a personal assistant device such as an Amazon Echo Dot. This was decided upon as they are the more commonly used devices.

The main focus of the project was to attempt to use an exploit to send commands to the casting device. This was decided as it was  a simple attack to do. The command was to play a video for the attack to work.

The main findings were that the security of the devices were strong. Simple security needed to be updated such as two-factor authentication and changing the password on the devices to make them stronger.

I originally chose science in college but moved to IT for the remainder of my time there. I chose networking and cyber security as they are a practical course.

It was the closest university to home and was also one of the best one to go to.
